The South San Francisco Public Library has been awarded San Mateo County Measure A monies, which has been combined with City of South San Francisco funding to allow for the remodel of the 8,000 square foot main floor of Library. In addition, the Library project has received generous grant support from the Sand Hill Foundation, the Morris Stulsaft Foundation, and The Bothin Foundation via the South San Francisco Friends of the Library.

This remodel will allow the library to meet the growing demand for family programs and computer access as well as promote the library collection emphasizing current topics, homework support and popular items, displayed in user-friendly and accessible mobile shelving.  Read our Frequently Asked Questions page for more information. Don't miss the Reopening Celebration of the Grand Avenue Branch Library on Saturday, October 15, 2016. Click here for all of the details.

The final floor plan for the Grand Avenue Library was selected after extensive community input.

The renovation improvements will include:

  • Painting the entire interior of the main floor of the building, and adding new carpet and flooring throughout
  • New shelving – all to be mobile to allow increased flexibility of the repurposed spaces
  • Increasing power and data outlets throughout the building to accommodate increasing demand and emerging technologies
  • Increasing the bandwidth to 1 gigabyte and adding a wireless node for enhanced access and adding more computers for public use
  • Adding an outdoor patio space, with a new door from the “marketplace” area (see renovation plans) and an ADA accessible emergency exit to the City Hall parking lot.  This new space will give us much more flexibility and capacity for our summer food program, large events and programs as well as providing an outdoor reading space
  • Reconfiguring the interior spaces to include a glass walled quiet reading, study/meeting space in the adult area of the library
  • Adding a second, ADA accessible public restroom and a new, accessible exit from the adult area to the City Hall parking lot
  • An exciting new teen area with a “genius bar” technology section and fun, comfortable seating to encourage collaboration, learning and study
  • Creating a dedicated toddler/parent corner with playful, age appropriate furnishings to encourage reading together and for hosting special story times
  • A welcoming children’s area with great flexibility for study and interactive programs
  • A newly signed entrance on Walnut Avenue which will be much more visible from both Walnut and Grand Avenues
