Here for the Beer: 47 Hills Brewery16 01-05 47 Beer 2

(L-R) Drew Barrington, vice president and co-founder, and John Tucci, president and founder, work to get 47 Hills Brewery in shape for its spring launch.

John Tucci, 47 Hills’ president and founder, always had a dream of opening his own brewery in San Francisco. Having been in the brewing industry since 1992 – when he first studied brewing and malting science in Bavaria – it seemed like a natural next step in his career.

In 2012, John found out the brewery he was working for wasn’t renewing its lease, and he knew his chance had finally come.

“It was a last minute thought to make a deal and get a hold of the equipment,” he said. “The only way I could make it happen was to call my friend, Drew, who has years of construction experience. I just called him up one day and threw it at him.”

“I didn’t even have to think about it,” Drew Barrington, now the brewery’s vice president and co-founder, chimed in.

That conversation was the start of the pair’s passion project, 47 Hills Brewery. Here’s what else the two had to say about their venture, which is slated to open its doors to the public in the spring.

What made you decide to launch your business in South San Francisco?

John: We had looked in San Francisco and weren’t really satisfied with what we came up with. It didn’t quite fit our model. When we started looking here in South San Francisco, the opportunity really started to be there.

Drew: The City has been really helpful too. The Planning Commission was very forthcoming and easy to talk to.

What excites you the most about this process?

Drew: Bringing people together; the beer; the experience.

John: South San Francisco really seems like it’s picking up steam right now, so I think our brewery will be well received. It’s something different and easy to get to.

When it comes to your beers, what do you expect to become fan favorites?

John: We’ll focus on German, English, Belgian, and some American styles … All secret recipes of course!
How did you come up with the name “47 Hills Brewery?”

Drew: Oh, this one’s easy. There are 47 named hills in the county of San Francisco, so that’s where the name came from.

Would you like to share any fun facts?

Drew: John plays mandolin, and I play harmonica and sing. We’re currently in a four- to five-piece band and still play when we can.

So can we look forward to any concerts at the brewery?

Drew: I think we’ll play once it gets rolling. When we’re down here, we may as well be playing!

We’ll all be anxiously awaiting their grand opening at 137 S. Linden so you can sample some of their work for yourself. In the meantime, follow 47 Hills’ construction and progress at and
