Wearables for Wellness

We are pleased to announce the launch of the library's new Self Health Center and Wearables for Wellness program!

Our Self Health Center is located at the main library and includes a collection of wearable fitness and activity trackers that you can check out and use at home. In addition, we have information on a variety of preventive health and wellness topics, a download station where you can view information from your wearable fitness tracker, a smart scale, and a blood pressure monitor.

To find out more about our Wearables collection, visit our blog. If you want to share your experience with our health and wellness collection on social media, you can use the hashtag #HealthySSF.

If you'd like to share your thoughts on these programs, we invite you to take a brief survey.

The Self Health Center and Wearables for Wellness are funded by a Pacific Library Partnership Innovation Grant.

The following devices are available at this time:

Fitbit Charge HR - Monitor your heart rate, steps, distance walked, calories burned, and more with this advanced fitness tracker. You can even use it with a compatible smartphone to get call notifications.

Fitbit Flex - This wireless activity and sleep tracker allows you to set daily activity goals and uses LEDs to show your progress toward those goals throughout the day. You can also monitor your sleep and use it as a silent alarm clock.

GoPro HERO Session - Become the next YouTube sensation! Use this tough, tiny camera to record just about anything. You can use it as a dash cam, make how-to videos, give virtual tours, or record your favorite hiking trails. If you can imagine it, you can make a movie out of it.

Jawbone UP3 - The Jawbone UP3 can monitor your heart rate and sleep quality to show you how these affect your overall health. Used in conjunction with the Up App, it can help you make better choices in your diet, remind you to get up and move regularly, and suggest ways to fit exercise into your daily routine.

LeapBand - Encourage your child to get up and moving with this fun wearable. Kids can choose a virtual pet to play with and take care of. Physical activity earns points that they can use to get fun rewards or unlock accessories for their pet. The LeapBand is recommended for kids aged 4-7.

Moov Now - Like a personal trainer you can take with you anywhere, the Moov Now analyzes your speed and movement to give you real-time feedback on your form and reps. Whether you're running, walking, swimming, boxing, biking, or interval training, the Moov can talk to you to offer encouragement, count your reps, and offer motivation during the toughest workouts.

Spire - Spire is a different kind of wearable. Instead of monitoring your heartbeat or steps, it monitors your breathing to help you identify situations that cause stress, and reminds you to take time out to breathe and clear your mind.

Garmin Index Smart Scale - This Wi-Fi connected scale can measure your weight, BMI, body fat, skeletal muscle mass, and bone mass. Use it as part of of your plan to build muscle, lose weight, or be more healthy overall.

Withings Smart Kid Scale
 - New parents will appreciate this scale that will monitor your child's weight from birth to 8 years old, up to 55 pounds. Use it with the free Withings Baby Companion app to log feedings and view growth charts and comparisons.

Withings Smart Body Analyzer - Weight alone isn't necessarily a good measure of health, and this highly-precise scale measures fat mass, muscle mass, water percentage, and bone mass to give you a more accurate picture of your overall health. You can use the companion app to set goals, track your nutrition, and achieve your fitness goals.
