Our first ever Fixit Clinic was a huge success! Partnering with the San Mateo County Office of Sustainability we hosted a Fixit Clinic where 25 coaches and fixers and 58 community members worked together to repair household items instead of sending them to the landfill. We saw toasters, microwaves, lamps, computers, DVD and CD players, vacuums, sewing machines, jewelry, clothing, and even an old film projector! Individuals left feeling more confident in doing their own repairs and more connected with their neighbors. The goal of the Fixit Clinic is not to have your item fixed for you but instead to actively participate in the taking apart, making the fix, and putting the device back together.
This is what our participants had to say when asked, “How did the program impact you and your community?”

“Keep waste out of the landfill.”

“(I am) more self-assured to fix things.”

“I fixed my Dad’s wheelchair.”

“(I) feel more locally connected working with knowledgeable repair people who were very helpful and worked as a team.”
