New Sister City Confirmation
At the October 28th City Council Meeting, a presentation was heard from the Basque Cultural Society on a proposal to accept a city in the Basque region of Southern France to be the City's fifth Sister CIty.  The city, St. Jean Pied de Port, is the capital of the provice of Baxe Nafarroa and is one of the most visited cities in the Basque country.  Pied de Port means "foot of the pass" and this city is part of the pilgrimage "Way of St. James" to Santiago de Compostela.  It was burnt to the ground in 1177 by King Richard the Lionheart of England.  Several Basque families have immigrated from this town to South San Francisco, and our City is also the home of the Basque Cultural Society of Northern California.

The Sister City Committee recommended at the same meeting that the City Council approve this application for Sister CIty status and establish a Sister City relationship with the City of St. Jean Pied de Port.  The Council voted unanimously to approve.

About Sister Cities Intenational
The Sister City Program began in 1956 when President Dwight D. Eisenhower initiated the People-to-People Program.

Sister Cities International (SCI) is a nonprofit citizen diplomacy network creating and strengthening partnerships between the United States and international communities in an effort to:
  • Increase global cooperation at the municipal and city level
  • Promote cultural understanding
  • Stimulate economic development

SCI leads the movement for local community development and volunteer action by motivating and empowering private citizens, municipal officials, educators, and business leaders to conduct long-term programs of mutual benefit.
