About Us
Mission Statement
The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.
Department Organization
The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. In addition, there are a group of affiliated organizations that operate out of City facilities and park locations. These activities are co-sponsored by the Department, but are not staffed or supervised by City personnel.
The department supports is mission to the City through the activities of four divisions:
- Administration Division - Managing departmental business activities and providing leadership and oversight in an effective and efficient manner to provide high quality customer service as well as supporting each the divisions.
- Facilities Division - Managing and maintaining public buildings that are functional, safe, active, and efficient.
- Parks Division - Creating and maintaining parks and open spaces that are save, clean, and sustainable while engaging the public with educational opportunities about South San Francisco's outdoor resources.
- Recreation Division - Sponsoring recreation and enrichment programs that meet community needs, address childhood obesity, promote wellness, create a culture of curiosity and learning, enhance the quality of life for the participants, and stimulate economic and community development.
The Parks and Recreation Commission and the Cultural Arts Commission, which are appointed by City Council, provide policy direction. Several volunteer and advisory citizen groups also provide support and recommendations to the Director and staff.

About the Friends
The South San Francisco Friends of Parks and Recreation is a non-profit volunteer citizen's group organized to support parks, programs, and facilities.
Activities
- Coordinate fundraising activities with the community to support parks and recreation programs
- Assist with City-sponsored events and activities that support and engage residents

Volunteer Application
Improving Public Places
The Parks and Recreation Department and the Improving Public Places Group host a number of cleanup days and flower and tree planting events throughout the year. Volunteers share a common vision of creating vibrant landscapes within South San Francisco by picking up litter, and planting flowers and trees.
Time Commitment
It’s up to you! Volunteers can participate in one day cleanup events or offer many years of service.
Corporate and Service Club Volunteers
The Parks and Recreation Department co-sponsors volunteer projects for service groups and corporate partners. These projects can include landscape projects like flower and tree planting, and cleanup projects, and donating and installing park fixtures like park benches, picnic tables, and play equipment.
Qualifications
No experience is necessary – just a passion for making our city a better place and playing in the dirt! Volunteers may be individuals, or members of youth organizations, service clubs, businesses, schools groups, and neighborhood or common interest associations. Volunteers and parents of volunteers under 18 years old must complete and submit a volunteer services waiver.
