Ongoing Projects & Community Engagement Updates

  • The Capital Improvement Program is a short and long-term plan for projects related to the City's infrastructure. Projects are categorized into six areas: streets, storm drains, sanitary sewers, public facilities, parks, and traffic. The highlights below are in a pre-construction or construction phase.

    2023/2024 Street Surface Seal Project

    (See schedule below)

This project provides asphalt pavement maintenance of several residential, collector, and arterial streets in Downtown and Old Town neighborhoods of the City of South San Francisco (City) as part of the Pavement Management Program (PMP).

With over 140 centerline miles of roadway, the pavement network represents a highly visible and valuable asset to the community and local businesses.

Residents of the City identified the condition of the roadways as a priority concern through public outreach by City Council and the City Manager. As a result, City Council secured funding for yearly asphalt pavement maintenance projects that will repair localized failed sections of the asphalt pavement prior to application of Surface Seal.  New high visibility, thermoplastic lane line delineation, legends and markings will be applied once the surface seal treatment has had a chance to set / cure for a minimum of 7 to 10 days.

City PW Engineering staff has divided the City into 6 distinct areas that are naturally divided by major arterial roads as shown in the map (2024-2029 Surface Seal Map and Schedule).

Street parking will be temporarily impacted during construction.  Temporary No Parking signs will be deployed notifying the public of sections of street parking that will be impacted by the scheduled construction. Work may also result in temporary sidewalk closures as work is underway. The work is scheduled from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Residents can expect minor delays through the work zones during construction. Temporary vehicular detour signage will be deployed. The use of alternate routes is encouraged. Please follow signage and safety personnel instructions at all times.

The work on this project will occur in 3 Phases.

    • Phase 1 only includes repair of localized failed asphalt pavement areas in the roadway.  (Completed)
    • Phase 2 will start at completion of Phase 1 and is a "Winter Suspension" as the project will not be able to proceed during inclement weather season. (Completed)
    • Phase 3 includes the removal of existing lane delineation, application of crack seal, application of surface seal, and installation new thermoplastic lane line delineation. (In Progress)

Phase 1 started in early October 2023 and concluded in February 2024.  Phase 3, the start of the surface seal treatment that includes the crack seal treatment, pavement striping removal, application of the surface seal and replacement of pavement striping commenced in mid-June of 2024 and concluded in August 2024.
