The Library | Parks & Recreation Center is celebrating Asian American, Native Hawaiian, Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month with programs representing many cultures of Asia and the Pacific, along with resources and guides to learn more about AANHPI Heritage.  

Library Programming  

Graphic Novel Exploration: Manga, Manhwa, and Manhua – Saturday, May 10, 11:00 AM 

Doodle the day away at the Grand Avenue Library for AAPI Heritage Month! Explore the art of Manga, Manhwa, and Manhua. Play with stencils or get inspiration from graphic novels to recreate some of your favorite characters. 

Oyster Point Dragon Boat - Saturday, May 10, 1:00 PM 

Learn about the history and basics of the sport of dragon boating in this presentation led by South San Francisco's Oyster Point Dragons (OPD). This program is for all ages. 

Experience the variety of styles and approaches with which Asian painters envision their surroundings. Join us in sampling the creativity of these painted worlds. This program is for all ages. 

Adult Crafternoon: Kupe’e Bracelet – Friday, May 16, 1:00 PM 

Let's adorn our wrists with kupe'e. Traditionally worn during hula, kupe`e decorates wrists or ankles, drawing attention to the delicate movements of hands and feet. Come and weave your own Hawaiian bracelet. This program is for 18 years old and up. 

Nurses Unseen Encore Film Screening - Saturday, May 17, 11:00 AM 

A documentary film which explores the little-known history and humanity of the unsung Filipino nurses who risked their lives on the front lines of the COVID-19 pandemic while facing a resurgence of anti-Asian hate in the streets. This program is for all ages.

AANHPI Family Craft Night - Wednesday, May 21, 04:00 PM to 05:00 PM

Join us in the youth library for a family craft night celebrating AANHPI month.

May is Asian American Pacific Islander Heritage Month, and we have a fun day planned to celebrate. To honor the many cultures, you can enjoy storytimes, crafts, dancing, and music throughout the day. This program is for all ages.
