In South San Francisco, our work goes beyond maintaining our roads and bridges. If people cannot travel safely from Point A to Point B, then we have work to do.
We are committed to maintaining sidewalks, installing infrastructure that enhances pedestrian safety, and ensuring a comfortable journey for all travelers. One of our key services includes installing ADA-Compliant curb ramps. If sidewalks are uneven, we re-grade them, providing a smooth and even surface for all.
What are Curb Ramps?
A newly installed curb ramp, marked by a vibrant yellow panel and distinctive nubby texture, eases the transition from sidewalk to street for pedestrians. Their yellow color and bumpy texture act as visual and tactile signals for pedestrians, and particularly aid those with limited vision or mobility.
Background
The City’s ADA Transition Plan has identified pedestrian access ramps in need of reconstruction to provide accessible routes at crosswalks. The City was awarded a grant from the Community Development Block program of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development to make some of these needed upgrades.
Project Scope
This year’s project will install approximately 80 total accessible curb ramps at key locations within each of the five districts in the City, as well as the construction of an accessible path at Cypress and Pine Park. The ramp locations were selected within eligible areas, based on census blocks with 51% or more low or middle income residents. The improvements will be constructed to meet Americans with Disabilities Act Standards and the Public Right of Way Accessible Guidelines. Our goal is to improve as many curb ramps as possible with the available funding, so the final quantity of ramps to be constructed might increase or decrease.
Construction Plan
Expect to see crews mobilizing in early Summer, working during the day outside of rush hour, and finishing up in Fall.
- Parking will be temporarily restricted near work areas.
- Temporary pedestrian routes, including detours.
- Travel lanes may close, with appropriate temporary traffic control, including lane closures and flagging when required.
We appreciate your patience and cooperation. Always follow the directions of on-site flaggers.
