City of SSF Receives Grant from NLC to Boost Economic Mobility

Published on August 08, 2024

The City of South San Francisco is proud to announce its participation in the National League of Cities’ (NLC) Advancing Economic Mobility Rapid Grant program. As a selected participant, the City of South San Francisco will receive a grant for economic mobility advancement along with six-months of coaching from NLC.

"We are honored to be selected for the National League of Cities' Advancing Economic Mobility Rapid Grant program. This grant, along with six months of expert coaching, will enhance our efforts to boost economic mobility for our community members. With support from our community and local partners, we are committed to creating a more equitable and prosperous future for all who call South San Francisco home,” said South San Francisco Mayor James Coleman.

The City of South San Francisco is one of just 12 municipalities from across the country selected to receive this NLC grant and expert coaching. This partnership with NLC will help the City of South San Francisco’s efforts in promoting economic mobility for residents.

This grant will assist with the City’s Promotores Program in providing expanded outreach, focusing on Tagalog, Mandarin, and Cantonese speakers. The Promotores Program assists individuals with system navigation services. Clients of the Promotores receive referrals to employment, housing, health care, food security and legal aid agencies. The Promotores Program is based out of the City’s Economic Advancement Center.

Municipalities have the power and authority to influence and impact upward economic mobility through their day-to-day operations and programming. When municipalities work to increase the upward mobility of residents, it benefits the local government as well. NLC selected the City of South San Francisco for the program because it demonstrated commitment to expand and test innovative solutions that advance residents’ economic mobility. In the months ahead, the City of South San Francisco will engage in NLC-led peer learning opportunities to support economic mobility.

“We know that the economic vitality of a municipality is directly linked to the economic stability of the people who live there,” said NLC CEO and Executive Director Clarence Anthony. “NLC applauds the communities selected for prioritizing economic mobility, and we look forward to working hand-in-hand over the next several months to maximize the impact of every dollar in this grant.”
