The Parks and Recreation Department mission is to provide opportunities for physical, cultural and social well being; protect and enhance the physical environment; and ensure the effective and efficient use of public facilities and open space.
The Parks and Recreation Department is organized by program area, with each program administered by a supervisor, coordinator, or specialist. In addition, there are a group of affiliated organizations that operate out of City facilities and park locations. These activities are co-sponsored by the Department, but are not staffed or supervised by City personnel.
The Parks and Recreation Department includes three divisions: Recreation, Parks and Facilities. The Director of Parks and Recreation is responsible for the operation and programming of recreation facilities, park planning and maintenance, and facility maintenance.
The Parks and Recreation Commission and the Cultural Arts Commission, which are appointed by City Council, provide policy direction. Several volunteer and advisory citizen groups also provide support and recommendations to the Director and staff.
