Sustainability & Resiliency

The City of South San Francisco and our community are in a unique position to continue to be a regional leader in sustainability and climate resiliency. By implementing citywide policies, initiatives, and education and incentive programs, the City, community, and our partners can spark and maintain the change needed to protect our environment and meet critical goals around carbon neutrality and greenhouse gas reductions.

Our Goals

As set forth in the adopted 2040 General Plan and Climate Action Plan, the City of South San Francisco will work to reduce carbon emissions by 40% by 2030, then 80% by 2040, and 100% carbon neutrality by 2045.

The City will achieve these goals by building upon the progress the City and community has already made and implementing additional emissions reduction strategies and actions as outlined in the 2040 General Plan and Climate Action Plan.

Together, these strategies and actions:

  • Provide a framework for reaching carbon neutrality.
  • Make South San Francisco more resilient to future climate impacts.
  • Have important social and economic benefits, such as addressing historic inequities, creating green jobs, increasing community green spaces, and improving public health.
