Glowforge Laser Cutter
What I am: The Glowforge is a desktop carbon dioxide (CO2) laser cutter with a 40-Watt laser beam generated by a glass tube attached to the machine's framework. The beam exits the tube and bounces through a series of mirrors, where it focuses into a tiny beam. The laser is the width of a human hair that cuts, engraves, and shapes designs from a variety of materials.

I'm recommended for ages: Makers under 10 must have adult supervision

Acceptable Materials
The Makerspace has some materials available. We recommend Proofgrade materials for predictable, no-fuss prints. You may bring material from the acceptable material list. Acceptable materials include but are not limited to:
- Glowforge Proofgrade wood
- Glowforge Proofgrade acrylic plastic
- Natural leather
- Hardwood
- Plywood
- Corrugated Cardboard (no tape or adhesive glue on it)
- Eco iron-on
Prohibited Materials
Using the wrong material can damage the Glowforge or lead to a less-than-stellar experience. Prohibited materials include but are not limited to:
- PVC - Emits chlorine gas when cut
- Draftboard/veneers/materials with MDF core - runs through air filter quickly
- ABS - Emits cyanide gas and melts
- Vinyl - Emits chlorine gas when cut
- Metals - Machine not strong enough to cut
- Resin - Emits fumes
- Fiberglass - Emits fumes
- Artificial Leather/vinyl - Emits chlorine gas
