In 2014, the Ceramic Tile Project was initiated by the Cultural Arts Commission. Children enrolled in the Parks and Recreation Department’s Childcare Division afterschool program were engaged to create colorful images on ceramic tiles. Overseeing the project was former Cultural Arts Commissioner, Jacqueline Pettinari, who was a dedicated advocate of youth arts education, having worked with the South San Francisco Unified School District for many years.
The children were asked to interpret the theme, “Joy, Fun, Laugh, Share.” Under the guidance of professional art teacher, Lolly DeEleanora and with assistance by Commissioner Pettinari, the enthusiastic young artists, sketched their designs, selected their colors and then carefully painted their images.
In 2018, the sixty-four tiles were installed within a circular grouping of a concrete seating area as part of the Alta Loma Park Playground renovation. The art installation was dedicated to the memory of Commissioner Jackie Pettinari.
