We are excited to announce that City staff has secured a $1.26 million grant from Peninsula Clean Energy to upgrade our historic streetlights for improved energy efficiency.
In 2024, City staff presented the Downtown and Old Town lighting study to City Council and the public, outlining recommendations to enhance existing lighting conditions. One key proposal was upgrading the current historic streetlight fixtures with energy-efficient LED lighting.
This grant will fund the upgrade of over 200 streetlights along Grand Avenue (from Spruce Avenue to Airport Boulevard) and Linden Avenue (from Railroad Avenue to Airport Boulevard). These improvements will enhance lighting levels while maintaining the historical character of the streetlights and achieving an estimated energy savings of 62%.
Additionally, the grant will support lighting enhancements at Cypress and Pine Park by upgrading the surrounding light fixtures to improve visibility and safety.
Who will be performing this work?
The City has contracted with DC Electric Group, Inc. for this project. Founded in 2010, DC Electric has successfully delivered numerous lighting projects throughout Northern California and the Bay Area. The firm specializes in n a range of electrical services, particularly in the realm of traffic signals, streetlights, and municipal electrical services.
Will there be road closures, traffic impacts, or access issues during construction?
No road closures or detours are expected, and traffic impacts will be minimal. Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be maintained throughout the construction period, with every effort made to limit disruptions. Minor interruptions to parking spaces near light poles may occur, but the City and Contractor will coordinate closely to minimize any inconvenience to nearby businesses and residents.
