Citywide School Traffic Calming Improvement Project
Safe Streets for Schools

Bringing Safer Speeds to South San Francisco
The City of South San Francisco is committed to improving safety for children, families, and the entire community by reducing speed limits in school zones. This initiative is part of our broader General Plan and Vision Zero strategy, aiming to eliminate traffic-related fatalities and serious injuries by 2025.
15 MPH School Zone Speed Limit
Under state regulations, local jurisdictions have the authority to set school zone speed limits at 15 MPH within 500 feet of schools. This reduced limit applies to two-lane roads in residential areas where the existing speed limit is 30 MPH or lower.
- Why 15 MPH? Slower speeds reduce the risk of serious injury in the event of a collision, creating a safer environment for all, especially children.
- When will it be in effect? The new school zones will operate at 15 MPH whenever children are present, such as during:
- Morning drop-offs
- Afternoon pick-ups
- Recess and other outdoor activities
