Installing Pedestrian Warning Lights (RRFBs)

Q: Will you install pedestrian warning lights/Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) at this crosswalk?
A: Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) are an effective method of encouraging drivers to yield to pedestrians at uncontrolled crosswalks, increasing the likelihood a driver will yield by up to 98 percent. When properly deployed at uncontrolled crosswalks, they have been shown to reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 47 percent. However, based on guidance by the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), RRFBs should not be installed at crossings where vehicles are controlled by Stop or Yield signs, where drivers should already be aware that they are required to yield to pedestrians. The location where an RRFB is requested may or may not be appropriate, due to existing traffic control. The TAC does not recommend installing RRFBs at crosswalks where vehicles are controlled by Stop or Yield signs, in accordance with FHWA guidance.
