Sidewalk Parking and Pedestrian Access

Q: Cars are blocking the sidewalk by parking up on the curb or partially backed out of their driveway. Can you install signs or pavement markings so I don’t have to walk in the street?

A: Cars may not legally park or block any portion of a sidewalk per section 22500 of California Vehicle Code (CVC). A vehicle parked in this manner is in violation of the CVC and may be cited and or towed even if the sidewalk is partially clear. Blocking the pedestrian right of way in this manner violates the rights of those with disabilities to use the sidewalk free of hazards, as established in the Americans with Disabilities Act.

The City may install curb markings or signs in key locations, such as along the high-injury network or near schools. If you observe vehicles partially blocking the sidewalk, please notify the City’s parking enforcement team at (650)660-0512.
