Veteran's Memorial Sculpture and Plaques

Project Overview

As part of the new Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center Project, the City of South San Francisco is getting a new Veterans Memorial at Orange Memorial Park. 

The new Veterans Memorial is designed to:

  • Honor and respect veterans
  • Preserve Eternal Flame sculpture, plaques & flagpole
  • Provide high visibility
  • Offer opportunities for reflection
  • Serve annual events
  • Include accessible surface
  • Located within Aquatic Center project boundary
  • Opportunity to expand the story/recognition

Eligibility Criteria:

  • South San Francisco Resident
  • Died in line of duty or from service connected exposure

 

Project Updates

Stakeholder Meeting 3 – April 24, 2025

On April 24th, the City of South San Francisco, ELS Architecture and Urban Design, and SWA Group facilitated a Veterans stakeholder meeting to gather input on the Veteran’s Memorial. Attended by Vice Mayor Addiego as well as members of the veterans community, the meeting provided a review of the memorial design, gathered input on the design of recognition plaques and shared information about the refresh of the Eternal Flame sculpture. Printed plaque submission forms were available and attendees were reminded of the June 8th submission deadline. Information about plaque designs and next steps for the Eternal Flame sculpture refresh will be shared via email and on the project webpage. Additional stakeholder meetings will be planned as needed.

City Council Presentation - May 24, 2023

On May 24, 2023, staff and the project design team presented an update on the new Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center project which included design of the new Veterans Memorial. The new Veteran’s Memorial will include an accessible pathway, event space, and lighting and offer opportunities for reflection while remaining highly visible by park users.

Stakeholder Meeting 2 - April 27, 2023

On April 27th, the City of South San Francisco, ELS Architecture and Urban Design, and SWA Group facilitated a Veterans stakeholder meeting to discuss the relocation of the Eternal Flame sculpture and memorial plaques from their current location at the corner of Orange Avenue and Tennis Drive to a new location to accommodate the new Aquatic Center at Orange Memorial Park. The project team presented a proposed design for a Veterans Memorial located off a new pedestrian pathway between the new Aquatic Center, parking and drop-off area, and existing playground. As identified in the Orange Memorial Park Master Plan, the pathway will ultimately connect to the Fernekes Building, basketball courts, and other park amenities. 

Stakeholder Meeting 1 - August 22, 2022

On August 22, 2022, the City of South San Francisco presented location options to relocate the Veterans Memorial to accommodate the New Orange Memorial Park Aquatic Center. Priorities for the new location include High visibility from Orange Avenue, safety, accessibility and ability to accommodate events.
