Mayor Eddie's Newsletter - May 9, 2025
Published on May 09, 2025
Hello South San Francisco Community,

Happy Mental Health Month!
This month our historic and beautiful City Hall is lit green for Mental Health Month—a visible reminder of something deeply important to me: Taking care of our mental health. Mental health is health! For San Mateo County and California, the 2025 May Mental Health Month theme is Mental Health as a Continuum. This theme challenges the binary idea of “healthy” versus “unhealthy” mental health, normalizing the wide range of mental health experiences and encouraging individuals to embrace and accept the full spectrum of their well-being.
As our friends at NAMI - San Mateo County reminds us, simple steps can make a big difference:
- Take time to rest and recharge
- Stay connected with others
- Reach out if you’re struggling—you're not alone
I’m committed to helping break the stigma surrounding mental health in our communities and making sure that all of our residents and visitors know that support is always within reach.
Please visit namisanmateo.org to learn more as well as visit San Mateo County’s Mental Health website for additional information.
The Mooring Ordinance in Action at Oyster Point
Thanks to the leadership of my colleague, Vice Mayor Mark Addiego, the City Council approved a Mooring Ordinance that empowers South San Francisco to remove blighted and abandoned vessels from our navigable waterways—including Oyster Point.
Boats that once sat idle for months can now be cleared with 10 days’ notice to vessel owners and the availability of the City’s on call salvage companies, allowing us to move swiftly in restoring public health, safety, accessibility to the City’s navigable waterways.
This past Wednesday morning, unoccupied vessels were removed from Oyster Point. This real-time progress marks a major step in transforming the area into a clean, welcoming, and beautiful space for everyone to enjoy.
Watch a video of the Mooring Ordinance in action.
Join Us for a Public Safety Community Meeting
I want to invite our community to a Public Safety Community Meeting on Tuesday, May 13 hosted by my colleague, Councilmember James Coleman (District 4) and Police Chief Scott Campbell. This event will give you the opportunity to hear directly from our Police and Fire Departments about the incident that occurred on April 28 on Arroyo Drive. We know this event has deeply impacted many, and we recognize the concern, fear, and questions it has raised. I want to thank my colleague for his leadership in organizing this event. Let’s use this time to come together, share space, and receive information, support, and reassurance. We’re in this together, South City.

Volunteer Opportunity: The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Foster Care Program
The Peninsula Humane Society & SPCA Foster Care Program is made up of individuals or families who volunteer to offer temporary care for shelter companion animals in their homes. Foster volunteers help shelter animals get ready for adoption. The pets may need to recover from an illness or injury, work on specific behaviors, or just relax in a home setting while we work on finding their forever home. Currently we are seeking volunteers to foster dogs, kittens, and rabbits. Volunteers must be 18 years old or older to foster animals.
