The City of South San Francisco is deeply saddened to announce the passing of former Mayor and Councilmember Pedro Gonzalez, a devoted public servant who dedicated more than four decades to the betterment of our community.

Born in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, Pedro came to the United States in 1954. He and his wife, Eldie, made South San Francisco their home in 1969, where they raised their three children, Prudencia, Silverio, and Sara, and were later blessed with seven grandchildren.

Pedro’s public service began in 1987 when he was appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission, eventually serving as Chair. During his tenure, the Commission advanced projects such as the expansion of Buri Buri Park and the creation of a citywide Master Plan for recreation facilities.

In 2000, Pedro became the first Hispanic American councilmember when he was appointed to the South San Francisco City Council, later elected by residents in 2001, and re-elected in 2005 and 2009. He served three terms as Mayor—in 2003, 2007, and 2013. His leadership helped bring forward many impactful projects, including the BART Linear Park Master Plan, expansion of the Community Learning Center, improvements at Westborough Park, environmental initiatives such as the City’s green packaging ordinance, and key infrastructure projects like the Oyster Point Overcrossing and the Downtown Parking Garage.

Pedro was also a strong advocate for inclusion and accessibility. He believed City information should be available in both Spanish and English, ensuring all residents could engage in civic life. He supported Spanish-language story time at the Grand Avenue Library, moderated Spanish-language ballot workshops for the League of Women Voters, hosted El Mundo Latino de Pedro Gonzalez on PEN TV, and worked tirelessly to make government more accessible to all.

Beyond legislation, Pedro was known for his deep connection with the community. He championed programs such as Spanish-language story time at Grand Avenue Library, Youth in Government Day, and the Parkway Summer Program, while also serving on numerous regional boards and committees.

Through his service, Pedro Gonzalez helped shape South San Francisco into a stronger, more vibrant community. His tireless dedication, generous spirit, and commitment to public service will be remembered with gratitude.

The City of South San Francisco extends its heartfelt condolences to Eldie, their children, grandchildren, and all who knew and loved Pedro Gonzalez.
